Purpose and Background
“Drilled Shafts and Auger-Cast Piles Testing For Assessments of Structural Integrity and Geotechnical Load Bearing Capacity” Mohamed Hussein, P.E., M.ASCE (1 hour, 20 minutes)
This presentation explores the testing methods used to ensure the reliability and performance of deep foundations. The discussion highlights the advantages of drilled shafts and auger-cast piles for various structures, such as bridges and high-rise buildings, and their adaptability to challenging geotechnical conditions. Key testing techniques, including low-strain integrity tests, crosshole sonic logging, and thermal integrity profiling, are discussed to identify flaws and assess load-bearing capacities. Case studies illustrate the importance of proper design, construction, and inspection practices to ensure the structural and geotechnical success of these foundation systems. The audience will gain insights into selecting and applying testing methods to enhance the safety and efficiency of deep foundation projects.
“State of the Art on Micropile Design, Construction, and Testing” by Sebastian Lobo Guerrero, Ph.D., PE, BC.GE, F.ASCE (40 minutes)
This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of micropile technology, covering their design principles, construction techniques, and testing methods. The presentation highlights the versatility of micropiles in providing solutions for challenging geotechnical conditions, including limited access, karst environments, and retrofit projects. Topics include the structural and geotechnical design of micropiles, such as tension and compression capacity, as well as advancements in installation techniques, such as self-drilling systems and casing configurations. Testing procedures for ensuring load-bearing capacity and structural integrity, including tension, compression, and lateral load tests, are discussed with case studies demonstrating real-world applications. This session equips the audience with the latest knowledge to effectively incorporate micropiles into foundation systems for modern infrastructure projects.
Benefits and Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of these sessions, you will be able to:
- Define the roles of drilled shafts and auger-cast piles in supporting various types of structures and describe their adaptability to different geotechnical conditions.
- Identify common flaws and defects in drilled shafts and auger-cast piles and analyze their impact on structural performance and load-bearing capacity.
- Explain the construction techniques of micropiles, including casing configurations, self-drilling systems, and grouting processes.
- Identify the design parameters for micropile load-bearing capacity, including bond zones, casing strength, and reinforcement requirements.
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Achievement of the learning objectives will be assessed through a short post-test.

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion
This course is worth 2 PDHs. To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short post-test online and receive a passing score of 70% or higher.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
