This techsession will only award PDHs for completion.

Purpose and Background

Automated Vehicles (vehicles that drive themselves) and Connected Vehicles (vehicles that talk to each other and to the infrastructure) have been on the horizon for ten years, but neither technology is mainstream yet. Both technologies promise to prevent crashes, save lives, improve mobility and reduce emissions. While the two technologies are very different, they are synergistic. And, they are largely misunderstood. Because of the broad impact of these systems, they are of great importance to civil engineers and the traveling public. In this session, we will talk about the current state of development of both technologies, discuss the hurdles that are still inhibiting their full realization, describe some deployments that are helping to move these forward, outline the role that civil engineers have to bring these into reality, and spell out the future - and the benefits - that is ahead of us.

Benefits and Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the role of both automated and connected vehicles in the built environment and to our transportation system.
  • Discuss exactly what these two technologies are, and what they are not; clear up some common misunderstandings.
  • Describe the role of civil engineers in these exciting technologies.
  • Analyze how these technologies will help reduce the tragic increases in traffic fatalities.

Assessment of Learning Outcomes

Learning outcomes are assessed by responding to the post-session survey. If the course is taken On-demand, there will also be a 10-question multiple choice post-test.

Who Should Attend?

  • Transportation Engineers
  • Civil Engineers
  • Students

How to Earn your PDHs

This course is worth 1 PDH. To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to watch the recording(s) and complete the post-session survey. If the course is taken On-demand, there will also be a 10-question multiple choice post-test.
