Dayakar Penumadu has been a faculty member in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UT) since fall 2001. He has been a member with ASCE since 1993. He currently holds Fred N. Peebles professorship and the Joint Institute for Advanced Materials (JIAM) Chair of Excellence position, joint with Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He served as the Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering from 2007 to 2014. Prior to joining UT, he was a faculty member at Clarkson University for 8 years. Dr. Penumadu served as the Principal Investigator (PI) for the national composites manufacturing institute IACMI (iacmi.org) and currently serves as a PI for two National Science Foundation Industry University Research Centers associated with fiber reinforced composite materials and dissimilar materials joining. Dr. Penumadu has published extensively with a current h‐index of 33 and over 120 peer‐reviewed journal publications with 3,500+ citations. Dayakar Penumadu is an expert in the use of advanced materials, in particular in areas where such materials form a joint. His projects have helped improve everything from Volkswagen automobiles to rural Tennessee bridges.
