Lin-Hai Han, Ph.D., F.ASCE, FICE, FIStructE, President of Guangxi University, and a Tenured Professor at Tsinghua University, China, has been named a fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.

Han was the Chair Professor of Structural Engineering at Fuzhou University before joining Tsinghua University in 2005, where he served as the Head of Department of Civil Engineering from 2010 to 2016, and the Associate Dean of School of Civil Engineering from 2017 to 2020.

Han’s research interests focus on structural engineering, with a particular emphasis on steel-concrete composite and hybrid structures, leading to the establishment of a life-cycled-based  theory and design methodology for concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) structures. He is the author/co-author of 257 international journal papers and is the sole or lead author of 7 books. His publications have attracted over 16,000 independent citations according to the Web of Science (WoS) database. He is among the top 4 scientists for Career-Long Impact in the field of Civil Engineering, as recognized by the latest Stanford/Elsevier’s World’s Ranking of the Top 2% Scientists. He has delivered Plenary/Keynote presentations at 39 conferences/symposia.

Han’s research contribution is widely recognized by the international academic community. He serves on the editorial boards of most of the leading journals in his field, e.g., as the Associate Editors of China Civil Engineering Journal of China Civil Engineering Society, Journal of Structural Engineering of ASCE, and Structures of Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE). He was elected a Fellow of IStructE in 2014 and is entitled to use the title "Chartered Structural Engineer". He is also a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). He was appointed a Distinguished Visiting Fellowship by the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK (2013). He is the founding Chair of the Subcomittee of Steel-Concrete Composite and Hybrid Structures (ISO/TC 71/SC 9), International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

The practical applications of Han’s research outcomes have been far-reaching and widely adopted in the design of record-breaking construction projects, such as high-rise buildings, mega-scale bridges, airports, and electric transmission towers. Notable constructions include CITIC Tower (Height: 528 m), Canton Tower (Height: 600 m), and Jinyanghe Bridge (Maximum pier height: 196 m).

Han has been leading the development of standards based on his research outcomes. He is the editor-in-chief of 9 design standards on CFST structures, including Chinese National Standard GB/T 51446-2021. He had served as the Convenor of Working Group 2 under ISO/TC 71, and led the development of standard ISO 16521: 2024 Design of Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular (CFST) Hybrid Structures

Han’s contributions to research, applications, and standardization have been recognized by numerous prestigious awards. As the leading researcher, he was awarded the China’s State Natural Science Award (Second Prize) in 2019, and the Natural Science Award of the Ministry of Education (First Prize) in 2022. He was the winner of the Prize for Scientific and Technological Innovation from the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation in 2023. He was also awarded the 2024 ASCE Region 10 Distinguished Service Medal Award.
