ASCE has honored Van E. Komurka, P.E., D.GE, F.ASCE, with the 2022 Martin S. Kapp Foundation Engineering Award for contributions advancing the science and practice of deep foundation and geotechnical engineering.
Komurka’s contributions to deep foundation engineering science have come nationally and internationally. His technical contributions include extensive work on practical engineering procedures for evaluating loading responses, foundation support costs, soil set-up, and bidirectional loading. His gifts reflect his more than three decades of experience related to instrumentation, analysis, and recommendations for the effects of ground movements caused by tunneling; instrumentation and evaluation of tunnel support systems; evaluation of construction submittals and claims as well as preparation and review of construction documents; blast vibration monitoring and interpretation; and design and testing of driven pile foundations, including dynamic monitoring.
He has contributed to the advancement of deep foundation engineering practice through extensive publications, seminars, short courses, and presentations. His impacts on our profession and community are reflected in numerous state and national project awards and a plethora of professional society service awards. Komurka is currently a senior engineer at the central office of GRL Engineers Inc.
The Martin S. Kapp Foundation Engineering Award recognizes contributions to design or construction of foundations, earthworks, retaining structures, or underground construction. Emphasis is placed on constructed works in which serious difficulties were overcome or substantial economies were achieved.
