Alvie C. “A.C.” Burkhalter Jr., a civil engineer who specialized in land development in the greater Houston area, a former Texas Section president, and an ASCE Board of Direction member from 1987 to 1989, has died. He was 93. 

Burkhalter, P.E., F.ASCE, spent 27 years with a major consulting engineering firm, from  1954 to 1971, when he joined Friendswood Development. He rose to chief engineering and operations manager, his positions upon retiring in 1992. 

An ASCE life member, his membership began in 1948, and over the years he was elected Houston Branch Manager and Texas Section president. In 1999, Burkhalter was honored as the Houston Engineer of the Year. 

Born in 1930 and raised in Houston, Burkhalter was a true Texan. He was a loving husband, devoted father, and grandfather who was active in his community. He and his his wife Leda were married 60 years.

After graduating from Texas A&M University in 1952 with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering, Burkhalter served in the U.S. Air Force on active duty and continued serving in the active reserve, from which he retired in 1983 with a rank of colonel. Professionally, “A.C.” was known for his integrity and professionalism.

Beyond his professional achievements, he had a passion for Checker automobiles. His trophy car now sits in the Gilmore Car Museum in western Michigan. In his prime, Burkhalter was an expert water skier.
