ASCE has honored Subramanian Narayanan, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, with the 2024 Edmund Friedman Professional Recognition Award for exemplary conduct and service in the field of civil engineering, delivering vital and enduring projects; for commitment to engineering education and helping young engineers from diverse backgrounds; and for outstanding community leadership and philanthropy.

Narayanan has led many projects and academic pursuits and has published 25 books and more than 325 papers during his five decades of professional experience. He is an award-winning author, consultant, researcher, entrepreneur, and mentor. His contributions have shaped the landscape of structural engineering and have also inspired others to pursue excellence in engineering. His expertise extends to reinforced concrete and earthquake resistance design. His book Principles of Space Structures stands out as a definitive resource in the field. His work in the design of steel structures developed approaches of modern limit state of design.

His pioneering spirit and dedication to advancing structural engineering theory and practice has been exemplified all his career. In the 1980s, when numerical methods were evolving, he developed state-of-the-art software packages for structural analyses and design of reinforced concrete and steel structures. His work began on mainframe computers, transitioning to the then emerging platform of personal computers. His software gained mainstream use, and he founded Computer Design Consultants, an early firm serving client needs in this area.

The Edmund Friedman Professional Recognition Award is presented to a member, except an Honorary Member, of the Society who is judged to have contributed substantially to the status of the engineering profession by establishing a reputation for professional service.
