Alexander Newman, is a forensic and structural consultant in the Boston area. During four decades of professional practice, Mr. Newman has been involved with structural design, renovation, and failure investigation of numerous structures around the country. He has been a managing engineer with the country’s leading construction failure and accident investigation firm and principal consultant with another prominent forensic-engineering company. Prior to that he has been a principal engineer with a large architectural and engineering firm, where he was responsible for structural design of projects ranging from simple residential buildings to complex, multistory industrial facilities. His experience also includes engineering positions with a light-gage steel contractor, precast concrete manufacturer, and being a manager of fabrication division with a steel fabricator.
Mr. Newman’s many publications include a number of award-winning articles that appeared in the leading engineering magazines. Most recently, his definitive reference book Structural Renovation of Buildings: Methods, Details, and Design Examples, 2nd ed., was published by McGraw-Hill Book Company in 2021. He is the author of two other authoritative books from McGraw-Hill: Metal Building Systems: Design and Specifications, now in its 3rd edition (2015) and translated into Chinese, and Foundation and Anchor Design Guide for Metal Building Systems (2013).
Mr. Newman has led numerous ASCE-sponsored educational seminars around the country for design professionals, building officials, owners and contractors. He has conducted training programs for the employees of U.S. State Department, NASA, U.S. Air Force, Iraq Reconstruction Team, and many educational and professional groups. Mr. Newman has taught a number of courses at Northeastern University.
