Purpose and Background

The accurate and repeatable determination of the condition of airfield pavements is of paramount importance for the effective management of these high value assets. The majority of airports in North America utilize the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) method as described in the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) D 5340 standard. This method and standard was developed approximately 30 years ago. It specifically assesses the types, extents and severities of various flexible and rigid pavement surface distresses to determine an overall pavement condition index on a scale of 0 to 100 (poor to excellent). Technology has changed rapidly. There are more efficient methods to assess pavement condition, including laser-based 2D and 3D image assessments which may be combined with mobile LiDAR. This webinar introduces several methods to determining pavement condition and provides the advantages and disadvantages of each and best appropriate practices for their effective use.

Primary Discussion Topics

  • Describe foot-on-ground, semi-automated and automated approaches to airport pavement condition surveys
  • Discuss advantages and disadvantages of each approach
  • Outline the real and perceived problems with each approach
  • Provide lessons learned and best appropriate practices for the various methods

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Know the best methods to utilize each condition assessment
  • Recognize the advantages and disadvantages of each approach
  • Compare costs and shortcomings of each approach
  • Highlight the key components to specify condition assessments

Webinar Benefits

  • Recognize the accuracy and repeatability of each method
  • Determine the key components of a request for proposal for condition surveys
  • Discuss how best to interpret and utilize pavement condition data
  • Learn how to obtain and utilize data cost-effectively
  • Determine the best way to incorporate data into an overall asset management system
Assessment of Learning Outcomes

Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).

Intended Audience

  • Civil engineers responsible for the management of airport pavements
  • Technicians and technologists involved in pavement condition data assessment
  • Asset managers
  • Public and private agency airport operators
  • Operations personnel responsible for the maintenance and rehabilitation of airport pavements

Webinar Outline

  • Overview of pavement condition assessment history
  • Outline of historical and current methods for pavement condition assessments
  • Technical overview of new methods for pavement condition assessments
  • Compare/contrast different methods
  • Overview of data types and utilization
  • Provide best appropriate practices and guidelines

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion

To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.

How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?

1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
