Course Length: 90 minutes
Purpose and Background
Carbonate and evaporite geologic formations underlie a large portion of the world. These formations contain soluble compounds that result in portions of the formations dissolving over time to produce cavities, conduits, enlarged joints, caves, etc. The landforms resulting from these features are referred to as karst. One of the many geotechnical concerns in karst is the occurrence of sinkholes. Repair techniques range from simple backfilling, to complex systems of filters and grouting, each of which has its own issues and impacts.
Sinkhole repair in karst pose safety hazards to individuals, utilities, and structures. Each site poses unique challenges due to the nature and distribution of karst features in the subsurface. This webinar includes a brief introduction to karst and the implications for geotechnical investigation and mitigation design. It discusses methods and strategies and provides examples for mitigating sinkholes.
This webinar presents a number of different approaches to mitigation, including, use of fill, grout, concrete, aggregate, and geosynthetics. It also presents factors for selecting appropriate measures relative to permanence, structural requirements, environmental impacts, and cost. This webinar discusses measures to optimize the benefit and minimize the potential for a performance failure and cost overruns.
Primary Discussion Topics
- Geotechnical issues in karst
- Sinkhole Mechanisms
- Environmental and hydrologic impact of sinkholes
- Applications and limitations of various methods for sinkhole repair in karst

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion
To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
