This webinar was co-sponsored by ASCE's Environmental & Water Resources Institute (EWRI) and ASCE Continuing Education
Instructor: David T. Williams, P.E., PH, CFM, BC.WRE, F.ASCE
Course Length: 1 Hour
Purpose and Background
HEC-RAS is a rather complicated 1-D hydraulics program that can easily be put together but also can easily be misused. This webinar presents subtle examples of the misuse of HEC-RAS that could potentially have significant effects on a project’s hydraulic results. The examples presented are related to how HEC-RAS performs its computations and how to properly configure HEC-RAS to simulate the phenomenon being emulated in the real world. These examples are based upon the instructor's review of submitted models, discussions with experienced users, the instructor's blogs on hydraulic modeling topics, and from his HEC-RAS Steady and Unsteady course lecture notes. Each example will be presented as if a reviewer were examining a submitted HEC-RAS model.
Primary Discussion Topics
- Boundary Locations and Modeling limits
- Sub and Super Critical flows
- Multiple Openings
- Use of HEC-RAS for Bank Protection Designs
- Importance of Channel Bank Location on computations
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Explain how HEC-RAS Does it's computations for various hydraulic conditions
- Determine what options to invoke for each type of hydraulic phenomena
- Know the relative magnitude of error that is generated going from one option to another
- Recognize the proper sequence for review of HEC-RAS Models
- Appreciate how project limits, model limits and study limits are different
Webinar Benefits
- Find out the intricacies of the latest version of HEC-RAS
- Learn common and uncommon mistakes that are often not detected
- For each mistake or mis-use presented, learn the proper adjustments needed
- Learn what to look for when reviewing an HEC-RAS model
- Determine how to look at an HEC-RAS project as a whole, rather than just each component at a time
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).
Intended Audience
- Intermediate to Advanced HEC-RAS modelers
- Reviewers of HEC-RAS Models
- Instructors of HEC-RAS Seminars and short courses
Webinar Outline
- Comparing existing to proposed conditions
- Sub and super critical flow adjustments
- Multiple opening cautions
- Channel velocity and shears stress variations
- Effects of channel bank locations on computations
- Water surface at the top of a levee
- Greatest errors generated when converting from HEC-2 to HEC-RAS
- Effects of unsteady flow on bridge modeling
How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion
To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
