Instructor:  David K. Hein, P.Eng.

Course Length: 1 Hour

Purpose and Background

This webinar outlines methods of evaluating the structural and functional condition of pavements. These types of assessments are used to objectively and systematically determine the condition and issues that may result in a reduced pavement life, determine the most economically maintenance and rehabilitation methods and timing or to ensure the traveling public is provided a safe and comfortable ride. Assessments can range from a simple visual assessment to more comprehensive non-destructive testing to measure surface distresses, ride quality, surface skid resistance and response to traffic loading.

Primary Discussion Topics

  • Evaluation methods for pavement conditions
  • How these types of assessments are used to determine conditions and issues
  • Assessment ranges

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Determine the benefits and costs to develop an understanding of the condition of roadway infrastructure
  • Be able to develop an appropriate scope that includes data needs and frequency of testing for pavement testing
  • Identify the need and value of using specialized equipment for the evaluation of pavement condition
  • Recognize indicators that may reduce the life of pavements if not addressed in a timely and logical fashion

Webinar Benefits

  • Find out the latest technologies in the evaluation of pavement condition<
  • Learn why pavements deteriorate and how to mitigate deterioration
  • Understand the types of equipment used to evaluate pavement condition and what the data means
  • Find out how to use pavement condition data to develop pavement performance prediction models to improve the overall health of the network
  • Determine the amount and quality of data needed to actively manage a pavement network
  • Evaluate methods for easy retrieval and understanding of pavement condition data
  • Be able to cost-effectively determine the type and frequency of pavement condition data collection

Assessment of Learning Outcomes

Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).

Intended Audience

  • Engineers and technicians involved in roadway design, construction and maintenance
  • State DOT and municipal agency personnel involved in the delivery of transportation infrastructure
  • Consultants involved in the evaluation of pavement condition
  • Specifiers and purchasers of pavement testing equipment
  • Specifiers and other technical staff involved in the development of performance specifications

Webinar Outline

  • How municipalities and other road agencies use pavement management systems (PMS) to determine condition of the road network
  • Understanding of the basics of pavement condition evaluation
  • Understanding of what the data means and how it can be used to improve pavement maintenance and rehabilitation decision making
  • Introduction to pavement distress surveys ranging from manual to semi-automated
  • Techniques available to complete surveys almost fully automatically
  • Available tools with examples of their use

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion

To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.

How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?

1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
