This webinar was co-sponsored by ASCE's Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) and ASCE Continuing Education

Instructor:  Alexander Newman, P.E., F.ASCE

Course Length: 1.5 Hours

Adhesive anchors, as any post-installed anchors, offer certain advantages over cast-in anchor bolts. For example, using adhesive anchors after the structure is in place helps avoid a common problem of dealinstructorng with anchor bolts cast in the wrong location. However, successful performance of adhesive anchors depends on using correct methods of their design and installation. After a number of recent high-profile failures, design and behavior of adhesive anchors have been subjected to a heightened scrutiny. The webinar provides a practical introduction to the design of adhesive anchors.

Purpose and Background

While in the past the design procedures for adhesive anchors belonged to their manufacturers, these procedures are now included in the scope of ACI 318 Appendix D. The design requirements of this document are rather complex, and some of them are discussed in a companion ASCE webinar Design of Anchor Bolts, which focuses on cast-in anchors. This webinar extends the discussion to adhesive anchors.

The webinar explores the complexities of the new design methodologies and explains how they affect the traditional practices of designing and placing adhesive anchors. The pertinent provisions of ACI 318 Appendix D, such as the relevant limit states for tension and shear loading, are examined and illustrated. The issues of proper installation and the new installer certification program complete the discussion. The audience is encouraged to ask questions throughout the presentation, which concludes with the final Questions and Answers opportunity.

Primary Discussion Topics

  • Differences between the behavior of cast-in anchor bolts and adhesive anchors
  • Provisions of ACI 318 Appendix D for resisting tension and shear loading
  • Combined loading on adhesive anchors
  • Influence of field conditions and loading type on the behavior of adhesive anchors
  • Learning from failures of adhesive anchors

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Know the differences between the behavior of cast-in anchor bolts and adhesive anchors
  • Explore the limit states for resisting tension and shear loading on adhesive anchors
  • Become familiar with practical design procedures for adhesive anchors

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion

To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.

How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?

1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
