This webinar was co-sponsored by ASCE's Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) and ASCE Continuing Education
Instructor: J. G. (Greg) Soules, P.E., S.E., P.Eng., SECB, F.SEI, F.ASCE
Course Length: 1 Hour
Purpose and Background
Nonbuilding structures are used extensively in industrial facilities all over the world. Many of these industrial facilities are located in areas of high seismicity. Chapter 15 of ASCE 7-10 contains extensive requirements for the seismic design of nonbuilding structures. Knowledge of the requirements and application of ASCE 7-10 Chapter 15 is essential for any structural engineer involved in the design of industrial structures and facilities.
Primary Discussion Topics
The speaker will discuss:
- The types of nonbuilding structures within the scope of the seismic provisions of ASCE 7-10
- Why nonbuilding structures are treated differently than buildings for seismic design
- The determination of basic seismic parameters for the use in the design of nonbuilding structures
- The selection of the seismic force-resisting systems for nonbuilding structures similar to buildings using a trade-off between ductility and strength
- The use of reference standards in the design of nonbuilding structures not similar to buildings
- The determination of seismic forces on nonbuilding structures
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify why nonbuilding structures are treated differently than buildings for seismic design
- Determine how to determine the basic seismic parameters for nonbuilding structures
- Determine when to use certain seismic force-resisting systems based on trading off ductility for strength
- Identify how to apply reference standards in the design of nonbuilding structures
- Recognize the determination of seismic forces on nonbuilding structures
Webinar Benefits
- Learn how to determine the basic seismic parameters for nonbuilding structures
- Become familiar with typical situations where ductility can be traded off for strength in the selection of the seismic force-resisting systems for nonbuilding structures similar to buildings
- Understand how to apply reference standards in the design of nonbuilding structures
- Learn how to determine seismic forces on nonbuilding structures
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).
Intended Audience
Structural Engineers involved in the design of industrial structures and facilities will benefit from this webinar.

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion
To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
