Instructor:  David K. Hein, P.Eng.

Course Length: 1 Hour

Purpose and Background

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), issues an annual report on the state of the transportation infrastructure in the United States.  Since 1998, the grades have been near failing, averaging only Ds, due to delayed maintenance and underinvestment across most categories.  One of the most effective ways of improving the condition of our transportation infrastructure is to make it last longer.

Concrete roads have been used in North America since the early 1900s.  The report of the 1914 National Conference on Concrete Roadbuilding contained over 260 pages of guidelines on all aspects of concrete pavement design and construction.  Numerous road tests were conducted over the years and considerable research and development has been done in the past 30 years.  However, poor performance of concrete pavements is still not uncommon.

This webinar examines the basic design principals of rigid (concrete surfaced) pavements to give participants a good understanding of what matters to ensure the maximum pavement life possible.  While processes and procedures are in place for both quality control and quality assurance, changes and variations in the materials, weather conditions, contractor operations, etc. can have a significant impact on the life of the pavement.

This webinar is part of a 3-part series of webinar on Roadway Construction, Inspection and Maintenance Techniques to Minimize Life-Cycle Costs.  The complete series of webinars includes:

  • Part 1: Roadway Construction Inspection Techniques: Easy Methods to Improve Pavement Performance
  • Part 2: Roadway Construction Quality Control and Inspection Techniques for Concrete Surfaced Pavements
  • Part 3: Roadway Construction Quality Control and Inspection Techniques for Asphalt Surfaced Pavements

This third webinar in the series Construction Inspection and Quality -Concrete Surfaced Pavements focuses on the production, placement, maintenance and rehabilitation of concrete surfaced pavements.

Primary Discussion Topics

  • Materials selection and production in the concrete production plants (producing the right materials and proper quality)
  • Pavement construction including subgrade preparation, drainage and concrete surface placement and finishing
  • Overview and performance of common concrete pavement maintenance and restoration techniques

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Determine the basic design principles for rigid pavements
  • Identify common construction practices to ensure a long-life pavement
  • Recognize key aspects of the production and placement of concrete pavements
  • Discuss concrete mix design practices
  • Gain an understanding of old and hot weather concrete placement issues
  • Identify proper jointing details
  • Recognize techniques to provide a smooth riding surface
  • Surface finishing to minimize tire/pavement noise
  • Surface finishing to ensure adequate frictional properties
  • Determine inspection techniques to maximize concrete pavement life

Webinar Benefits

  • Know the critical design and construction processes
  • Focus on the critical items to maximize pavement life
  • Identify the consequences of deviations from construction specifications
  • Understand the value of design and constructability reviews
  • Document the value of high quality construction inspection
  • Understand key testing requirements
  • Become more observant to identify issues that may impact pavement life

Webinar Outline

  • Introduction to concrete surfaced pavements (some statistics of their use, pavement types, and terminology)
  • Overview of design principals of concrete surfaced pavements
  • Brief introduction to plant production and construction processes
  • Concrete plant production processes
  • Surface preparation methods
  • Placement of concrete layers
  • Achieving smoothness and friction
  • Common maintenance and restoration practices

Assessment of Learning Outcomes

Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).

Intended Audience

  • Engineers and technicians involved in roadway design, construction and maintenance
  • State DOT and municipal agency personnel involved in the delivery of transportation infrastructure
  • Trainers and educators involved in qualifying or certifying construction inspectors
  • Contractors interested in advancing roadway construction technology

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion

To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.

How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?

1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
