This webinar was co-sponsored by ASCE's Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) and ASCE Continuing Education
Instructor: T. Eric Stafford, P.E.
Course Length: 1.5 Hours
Purpose and Background
The newest edition of ASCE 7 (2010) includes many significant technical and organizational changes to the General Requirements for Determining Wind Loads from the 2005 Edition (ASCE 7-05). This webinar will address many of those significant changes. The General Requirements include the basic wind speed maps, exposure categories, enclosure classification, gust effects, directionality factor, among others. The wind load provisions have undergone a substantial reorganization to improve the clarity of applicability for the various design methods and procedures. The reorganization concepts in addition to transition tools will be discussed. The basic wind speed maps have been updated to reflect strength design-level wind speeds while also incorporating newly available data. The impact of the new wind speed maps, in addition to correlation with allowable stress design will be thoroughly discussed. Additionally, the new wind speed maps necessitated a recalibration of the wind-borne debris region. These changes, along with many others will be covered in this webinar. Attendees will gain an acute understanding of the changes to the general requirements for determining wind loads in ASCE 7, in addition to a thorough explanation of the rationale for changes to the provisions. The impact of these changes on the design of buildings for wind loads will be clearly demonstrated with illustrations and examples as applicable.
Primary Discussion Topics
- Reorganization
- New wind speed maps
- Wind-borne debris regions
- Exposure categories
- Gust effects
Learning Outcomes / Benefits
- Become more familiar with the new layout of the wind loading chapters in ASCE 7-10 and understand how to locate specific provisions from ASCE 7-05
- Gain an understanding of the rationale for making the changes to the wind provisions in ASCE 7-10
- Identify the impact and reasoning for reintroducing Exposure Category D for hurricane-prone regions
- Avoid making costly errors due to a lack of understanding of the appropriate adjustments applicable to allowable stress design and products that have been tested to procedures historically based on allowable loads
- Gain a better understanding of the revised wind-borne debris region and the impact of multiple maps on where the region applies
- Achieve a better understanding of how the strength design-level wind speed maps will impact design
- Discuss the required correlation of the new wind speed map values with the prior editions of ASCE 7 and existing test protocols and products tested for wind and wind-borne debris
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).
Intended Audience
- Structural engineers
- Achitects
- Code officials and code consultants

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion
To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
