ASCE has honored Ahsan Kareem, Ph.D., F.EMI, Dist.M.ASCE, NAE, with the 2021 Nathan M. Newmark Medal for his innovative contributions to advancements in a wide range of areas in structural engineering and engineering mechanics from theory and practice to leadership and education.
Kareem is internationally renowned as a scholar/engineer who has made lifetime transformative contributions to structural engineering theories, practices, and education through a series of diversified, groundbreaking innovations and sustained mentoring of students. The fact that Kareem’s work transcends the laboratory and the computational platforms into practice embodies the very definition of universal recognition as a research leader, along the legendary footsteps of Prof. Nathan Newmark, whose research is steeped in fundamentals of basic and advanced concepts of structural mechanics with immediate applications to structural engineering practice.
The Nathan M. Newmark Medal is bestowed upon a member of the Society who, through contributions in structural mechanics, has substantially strengthened the scientific base of structural engineering, these contributions having been made in the form of papers or other written presentations.
