ASCE has honored Limin Zhang, Ph.D., F.ASCE, with the 2023 Ralph B. Peck Award for outstanding contributions in developing methodologies for multirisk assessment, risk-based engineering design, and emergency management as well as the publication of significant case histories.
Zhang’s published case histories range across various geotechnical applications. Of particular note are his seminal contributions regarding the hazards posed by earthquake-induced landslide dams, founded in his extensive studies of case histories such as the more than 250 large-scale landslide dams that formed in the 2008 Wenchuan and 2014 Ludian earthquakes alone. His work on landslide dam risk assessment and mitigation has embodied the observational approach and philosophy put forward by the award's namesake, Ralph Peck.
The Ralph B. Peck Award is presented for outstanding contributions to the geotechnical engineering profession through the publication of a thoughtful, carefully researched case history or histories, or the publication of recommended practices or design methodologies based on the evaluation of case histories.
