ASCE has honored Xinzhong Chen, Ph.D., with the 2024 Robert H. Scanlan Medal for advancing the field of aerodynamics of buildings and bridges through development of analysis, modeling, and simulation approaches.
Chen has conducted a broad spectrum of research that addresses the most cutting-edge problems in the aerodynamics of long-span bridges and high-rise buildings, wind-induced responses of wind turbines, and other structures such as transmission line systems. His work has combined experiments and modeling to advance wind engineering, and has produced a large number of publications that have made a strong impact and received wide international recognition. He has received several prestigious awards from ASCE and other professional organizations.
The Robert H. Scanlan Medal is awarded to an individual in recognition of distinguished achievement in engineering mechanics based upon scholarly contributions to both theory and practice. The areas of achievement will generally be structural mechanics, wind engineering, and aerodynamics.
