ASCE has honored Abdolmajid Erfani, S.M.ASCE; Zihui Ma, S.M.ASCE; Qingbin Cui, A.M.ASCE; and Gregory B. Baecher, Ph.D., NAE, Dist.M.ASCE, with the 2024 Arthur M. Wellington Prize for the paper “Ex Post Project Risk Assessment: Method and Empirical Study,” Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, December 2022.
This study investigated the quality of early risk registers and risk assessments on 11 transportation projects and compared them with how the identified risks evolved on historical projects. The investigation involved the use of textual analysis of archival risk register documents. Finite-state automation methods similar to Markov chain models were used to track the changes in risk attributes.
At the time of publication, Erfani and Ma were Ph.D. candidates at the University of Maryland; Cui and Baecher are University of Maryland professors in the civil and environmental engineering department.
The Arthur M. Wellington Prize is awarded to the author or authors of a paper on transportation on land, on the water, in the air, or on foundations, and closely related subjects.
