ASCE has honored Vasileios E. Melissianos with the 2024 ASCE State of the Art of Civil Engineering Award for the paper “Onshore Buried Steel Fuel Pipelines at Fault Crossings: A Review of Critical Analysis and Design Aspects,” Journal of Pipeline Systems Engineering and Practice, September 2022.
This is a state-of-the-art review paper focused on 1) the calculation of the design fault displacement via deterministic and probabilistic methods, 2) the effect of numerical modeling parameters such as soil spring properties, and 3) the alternative pipe protection measures in terms of availability, efficiency, and selection process. It covers what is available and how to employ it in design, assisting engineers and pipe operators in improving pipe safety.
At the time of publication, Melissianos was research associate in the School of Civil Engineering, National Technical University of Athens.
The ASCE State-of-the-Art of Civil Engineering Award is presented to the individual, individuals, or committee that has prepared, for the benefit of the profession, the most outstanding paper that reviews and interprets state-of-the-art scientific and technical information.
