• What is the purpose of the committee?

  The Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge Task Committee will:

  • Review published literature regarding the future of engineering and civil engineering practice.
  • Evaluate the third edition of the Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge and determine if revisions are warranted.
  • Develop a fourth edition of the Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge, actively soliciting constituent input, including recommendations to make the CEBOK accessible to all audiences in the civil engineering profession.

     

• Who should serve on the committee?

  We are seeking a diverse collection of civil engineering minds to look critically at what it takes to enter the profession of civil engineering: the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to practice as a professional civil engineer. Applicants must be members of ASCE.

  This could include:

  • Educators
  • Practitioners
  • Institute members and leaders;
  • Leaders in other ASCE areas with a related interest:
  • Institute education and professional practice committees
  • Other ASCE Society & Strategic Initiative Committees

• When is the first meeting?

  Applications will be accepted through July 19 and members of the new task committee will be selected in late Summer 2024. The new task committee will convene in October 2024.

• What is expected of committee members?

  Expectations for members of the Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge Task Committee:

  • Commit to participating on the committee for two years. If unforeseen circumstances prevent you from fulfilling your two-year commitment, you commit to notifying the leadership as soon as possible.
  • Participate in regular meetings – bi-weekly/monthly virtual meetings for the first 8-12 months; one face-to-face meeting (travel funding for members pending ASCE budget approval) per year. Meetings will be less frequent in the second year of the committee.
  • Voting members will be expected to attend all face-to-face meetings of the committee and will receive partial reimbursement of their travel expenses (in accordance with ASCE policy).
  • Corresponding members will not be expected to attend the face-to-face meetings of the committee and will not be reimbursed for committee travel.
  • Review materials for meetings and be prepared to offer discussion and suggestions during meetings.
  • When asked, prepare materials for meetings (not every member will have an assignment for every meeting.)
