The Forensic Division is saddened to hear that Mr. Phil Hailes, Education Committee member, passed away on Oct. 17, 2024.
Phil joined our Education Committee after the 8th Forensic Engineering Congress (2019) in Austin. He has been active in serving our committee by contributing failure case studies. His case study on Sampoong Department Store Collapse will be included in our ethics package.
Phil delivered a guest lecture remotely discussing ethics and failures to students at Kent State in March 2022. His lecture was well received and resonated with over 60 students in the classroom. Phil attended FED ExCOM and Education Committee meetings in person (April 2022) in Atlanta. It was the first in-person ExCOM and committee meeting after COVID. Unfortunately, due to his health issues, he was not able to participate in our 9th Congress in Denver in November 2022.
