Purpose and Background

This session will discuss the future of the digital innovation in statutory process by making openBIM and openGIS shareable and scalable at a city scale. Attendees will gain insights to the workflow of integrating openBIM and openGIS, the information requirements needed for such a workflow, proven applications of an integrated platform based on open standards, and the challenges/limitations of openBIM. The speakers will also make the case for how openBIM and open GIS can become synergistic to the recent open-standards initiatives in the horizontal sector of the US.
City management using a digital twin that incorporates data models for assets is showing profound potential. Government agencies creating a data repository for storing BIM have seen the number of models grow into hundreds of thousands. The city of Dresden has a data repository with 136,000 models, Rotterdam has 205,000, and Hong Kong foresees 300,000 models in the future. The number can only grow as road and bridge models are added to the repository. The challenge for the cities will be managing the quality of the sheer number of models in a scalable-and-repeatable manner while using open standards.
This session is best suited for mid-senior level professionals with 5+ years of experience in their respective fields. This session is also suited for individuals with prior knowledge of and exposure to BIM, GIS, and digital twin concepts.
