This webinar was co-sponsored by ASCE's Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI) and ASCE Continuing Education
Instructors:
Amy L.Hackney, P.E., LEED AP BD+C, GRP
James A. McDonald, S.E.
Course Length: 1.5 Hours
Purpose and Background
Exposed architectural concrete is a highly desired architectural finish, but it often facilitates interior water intrusion. This webinar familiarizes architects, contractors, building owners and engineers with special considerations regarding the design and construction of exposed architectural concrete. It also focuses on factors within the structural design and construction process that affect the serviceability, impermeability, and appearance of architectural concrete. It highlights strategies to improve performance (such as coatings, crack injection, and admixtures). The instructor discusses advantages and disadvantages of various solutions.
Primary Discussion Topics
- Design provisions for architectural concrete that vary from structural concrete
- Construction methodologies for placement of architectural concrete
- Repair strategies to address water intrusion through architectural concrete
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Recognize what factors in structural design influence the serviceability and appearance of architectural concrete and how to specify provisions for desirable performance
- Understand what factors in construction influence the serviceability and appearance of architectural concrete and specify provisions for desirable performance
- Specify provisions during the design phase to limit the risk and liability of water intrusion through architectural concrete
- Explain the advantages and disadvantages of various repair methods to address water entry through architectural concrete walls and know the appropriate products to specify for repair.
Webinar Benefits
- Recognize the differences between designing architectural and structural concrete
- Determine solutions to enhance the performance of architectural concrete
- Examine the possibilities for rebar and concrete mix design specific to architectural concrete
- Determine impacts of admixtures on architectural concrete
- Determine appropriate repair methods for architectural concrete
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).
Intended Audience
- Architects
- Structural engineers
- Architectural engineers
- Contractors
Webinar Outline
- Overview of architectural concrete
- Design and construction strategies for architectural concrete
- Waterproofing enhancements and repair strategies
How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion
To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
