Instructor: Jerry Michel, P.E.
Course Length: 1 Hour
Purpose and Background
For many aspects of water management and environmental planning, a knowledge of size and time distribution of streamflow is essential. Although there are several methods available to determine the peak flow of flood events, often it is also necessary to know the duration and time distribution of flood events as well. One method available to analyze the size, duration, and time distribution of a flood event is through the use of unit hydrographs.
Activities around streams and drainages have come under more intensive scrutiny from regulatory agencies in recent years. Properly designed hydraulic structures, with the aid of unit hydrograph analysis, can aid in conveying drainage, protecting areas from the effects of high flood events at an economical cost, and at the same time satisfying regulatory requirements.
Learning Outcomes and Webinar Benefits
This webinar will provide engineers with the basic concepts in unit hydrograph application. These concepts can be used in the design of hydraulic and flood control structures to convey drainage and to minimize flood impacts in adjacent land areas. Participants will be exposed to two examples of unit hydrographs, the Snyder Unit Hydrograph and the SCS Unit Hydrograph, and how they are applied.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Gain an understanding of basic concepts and terms of unit hydrographs
- Determine how unit hydrographs are applied and used
- Gain an understanding of unit hydrograph types
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).
Intended Audience
Civil engineers involved in the design of drainage structures and flood control structures near drainages will benefit from this webinar.
Webinar Outline
- Basic concepts
- Application and use of unit hydrographs
- Examples of unit hydrograph types (Snyder and SCS unit hydrographs)
How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion
To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
