Knut Eriksen, P.E., M.ASCE, a member of ASCE since 1983, donated funds for this fellowship in 2022. His intent for this fellowship is to encourage civil engineering students and young engineers, 35 years of age or younger, who are licensed or in the process of becoming licensed, to pursue advanced degrees in leadership and management in order to focus their civil engineering career on leadership and management in education and practice. It was instituted by the Board of Direction on October 6, 2024.
Rules
- The Knut Eriksen Leadership and Management Fellowship may be presented annually to not more than two graduate civil engineering students, who will use the fellowship for tuition, research, and living expenses.
- The purpose of the fellowship is to further the education of worthy students pursuing advanced degrees, such as an MBA or another graduate management degree in leadership and management in addition to their degree in civil engineering, in preparation for leadership, management, and executive level positions in the civil engineering profession as a career goal.
- Eligibility
- At the time of application, the individual must be a member of the Society of any grade and in good standing at the time of application and award and must be 35 years of age or younger, licensed, or in the process of becoming licensed as a professional engineer with a few years’ experience and must demonstrate a commitment to the leadership and management practice of civil engineering.
- The fellowship may be awarded only to those students who will continue their formal graduate education at a recognized educational institution.
- Previous recipients of the fellowship are eligible to apply in any succeeding competition for these awards provided the other requirements of eligibility are satisfied.

- detailed annual budget statement (PDF);
- minimum of two recommendation letters, for student applicants, one letter must be from a faculty member; for young civil engineers, one letter must be from a faculty member and one letter must be from a supervisor or manager in industry;
- official transcript; and
- one- to two-page resume, including honors, activities, organizations, ASCE activities (including any offices held), and any work experience.

- Selection
- All applications will be reviewed by the Society Awards Committee or its designee for recommendation to the Executive Committee for final approval.
- The committee reserves the right to recommend that no award be made in a particular year if no meritorious applications are received.
- Selection is based on appraisal of applicant’s justification, educational plans, academic performance, potential for development, leadership, and financial need.
- Awards
- The amount of the fellowship will be determined annually by and subject to approval of the Executive Committee of the ASCE Board of Direction based on income from the fund endowment.
- The fellowship may be used toward tuition expenses and other academic fees reasonably and logically associated with an MBA program or another graduate management program.
- Recipient will be notified of selection in the spring by the Executive Director of the Society.
- Award funds will be sent to the recipient.

- A description of the proposed research and its objectives, signed by an institutional representative indicating proposed research is acceptable;
- A one- to two-page resume. Include honors, activities, organizations, ASCE activities (including any offices held), and any work experience.
- A completed contact information form (PDF)
- Minimum of two (2) letters of recommendation, one of which must be from; a faculty member/research nominator. Recommendations must be submitted online by the author and must have a signature and be on letterhead.
