Purpose and Background

Recent hurricane events have caused a tremendous amount of storm surge related damage in areas where damages could have been substantially less if the buildings had been built in consideration of the flooding potential. It is obvious in post-storm damage investigations that flood loads and the foundations required to resist those loads were not designed with any specific flood scenario in mind. Engineers and architects who are designing buildings on or near the coast should consider the latest design guidance available to reduce losses from a future coastal storm. The new flood provisions of ASCE 7-22 Supplement will be used to determine flood loads.

The presentation will include information on how to identify all coastal hazards including the effect of scour and erosion on the flood loads and foundation design. Design information about how to determine coastal flood loads using currently available engineering resources including ASCE 7 load combinations will be discussed. Methods and resources for selecting the right foundation for the loads and soils will be covered.

Understanding how to determine and apply flood forces to coastal buildings and foundations is clearly a need for the design professional engaged in designing buildings for coastal locations. Many buildings could be possibly saved and even re-occupied if the design had incorporated what is considered best practices regarding flood loads and foundations in coastal regions. Improved foundation performance is one significant contribution to reducing losses from severe coastal events and helping communities recover faster.

  • Explain how to determine the significant coastal hazards that coastal building designs must consider
  • Calculate flood loads on a coastal building using new provisions from ASCE 7-22
  • Examine the issues relevant to coastal building locations as learned from past hurricane events such as Katrina, Ike, Irma and Michael
  • Avoid future claims caused by not following the current “best practices” for foundation design
  • Explain about prescriptive foundation design guides such as FEMA 550 and new pier and beam foundation guidance applicable for some coastal regions
  • Review the damages severe flooding has caused to coastal properties and discuss the remedies for this type of damage
  • Explain how different foundation systems and installation methods affect foundation performance in severe flood events

This webinar will provide engineers with easily understood tools and design methodologies to determine the appropriate magnitude of flood loads accurately and adequately, and to select a foundation system and materials that have a good chance for successfully supporting the building throughout a coastal flood event.
