Virtual Workshop Brief
Road infrastructure is critical to the economic viability of the country. It provides access for the distribution and consumption of goods and services, mobility and access to health care, sports and exercise facilities, entertainment and tourism. We have developed our modern roadway infrastructure over the past 100 years or so. The network has had to adapt to changing vehicle loads and configurations, climate change and environmental deterioration and it will continue to adapt in the future. Pavement design is continually changing to meet these new challenges. The purpose of this workshop will be to provide hands on experience in the use of common pavement design procedures. This includes layer equivalency, deflection based, and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) 1993/1998 methods. Participants will also be introduced to new mechanistic-empirical methods which being adopted by State and Provincial Highway agencies across North America and is gaining use by Municipal governments. Participants will be provided with basic information required to effectively design a high traffic volume municipal roadway, a residential roadway and a parking lot. Access will be provided to a web-based application to carry out the designs. The participants will be asked to submit example designs by the end of the first day with the results discussed in an open forum on the second day.

Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed through case study analysis exercises and class discussions following the presentation of each major topic. A short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions) will also be administered.

Outline
Interactions: The workshop will be delivered in an adult-learning format that is centered around the concept of learning by interaction. To this end, each topic in Day 1 and 2 will include poll questions to foster and facilitate interactions. The attendees will be encouraged to share their experiences. The homework assignment will require the participants to complete pavement designs for specific scenarios that will be shared on Day 2 of the workshop. In addition, participants will be asked to take photographs of road distresses from their neighborhood to be discussed on Day 2 of the workshop.
