View Important Policies and System Requirements for this course.
This webinar was co-sponsored by ASCE's Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) and ASCE Continuing Education
Instructor: William L. Coulbourne, P.E., F.SEI, F.ASCE
Course Length: 1.5 Hours
Purpose and Background
This webinar will provide technical information important to engineers in the development of designs for elevating existing wood frame buildings. The requirement to elevate an existing building could be driven by the need to elevate a building located in the floodplain or simply to get the building out of a damp condition which is causing deterioration. The building foundation and new support system are important and these topics will be covered in this webinar. The impact of multiple environmental loads such as wind, flood, and earthquake on elevation requirements will also be covered.
Learning Outcomes and Webinar Benefits
You will learn how to apply environmental loads to an elevated foundation and to consider the existing foundation type and location in the application of the loads. The material has been developed in a way that assumes minimal knowledge of floodplain construction requirements and basic knowledge of applying environmental loads to buildings.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Gain an appreciation of a need to be involved in the work of elevating existing buildings
- Gain an understanding of how to apply environmental loads to these elevated buildings
- Determine what floodplain construction requirements might force elevating an existing building
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).
Intended Audience
The level of instruction is appropriate for engineers who could be engaged to provide expertise in the elevation of existing structures. The primary audience is engineers who are involved in structural design for environmental loads, floodplain regulations, assisting owners or communities with elevation project development or who perform building assessments for owners and/or communities.
Webinar Outline
- Requirements for elevating an existing building
- Floodplain construction requirements
- Assessing building condition
- Applying environmental loads
- Elevation methods
How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion
To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
