Course Length: 1 hour

Purpose and Background

The Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design is the first building in Georgia and 28th in the world to earn Living Building Challenge (LBC) certification, the world’s most ambitious and holistic green building achievement. Rather than being less bad for the environment and people, The Kendeda Building fosters regenerative systems. This not only includes a relationship between humans and nature where we give back more than we take, but also restorative relationships amongst people themselves.

This session is the first in the series. Shan and Joshua will provide a virtual tour of the building. Rather than focusing on the technical pathways to achieve LBC certification, which will be discussed in further details in subsequent sessions, they will discuss the ethos behind the goal. The “why” informs the “how;” it is this mindset-shift that serves as a model for how we can create multi-use infrastructure that results in a regenerative built environment.

Benefits and Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the ethos of the Living Building Challenge.
  • Summarize how The Kendeda Building satisfied the requirements of the 7 Living Building Challenge performance areas.
  • Explain the relationship between The Kendeda Building’s various systems (e.g., photovoltaic, water, and landscape), how they satisfy the technical requirements of the Living Building Challenge, and how they advance the ethos that aims to benefit the broader region.
  • Apply a mindset-shift in their work to move their region towards a more regenerative built environment.

Assessment of Learning Outcomes

Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).
