This webinar was co-sponsored by ASCE's Transportation & Development Institute (T&DI) and ASCE Continuing Education

Instructor:  Carmine Dwyer, P.E.

Course Length: 1 Hour

Purpose and Background

Pavement markings are the primary roadway lane position guidance provided to motorists, and their function is particularly important during night-time driving conditions. Maintaining minimum retroreflectivity to ensure roadways are safe to travel at night is the purpose for FHWA's proposed minimum retroreflectivity standards in the MUTCD. This webinar discusses a summary of FHWA's latest proposed standards on minimum retroreflectivity (Federal Docket: FHWA-2009-0139). It provides examples of maintenance methods suitable for complying with the standards. The maintenance methods include both retroreflectivity measurement and non-measurement options. Many of the practice descriptions include specific examples of methods used by transportation agencies (mostly state DOTs) or steps taken by them to prepare for a certain maintenance method.

Primary Discussion Topics

  • The need to inventory pavement marking assets and have a planned maintenance method
  • Maintenance methods which directly assess the retroreflectivity or brightness of in- service markings
  • Maintenance methods without the assessment of in-service markings

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the role pavement markings play in roadway safety
  • Describe the basic definition of pavement marking retroreflectivity and the standard test method of it (ASTM E-1710)
  • Articulate to others the upcoming standard and the need to prepare for it
  • Assess the various maintenance methods available to them
  • Select and employ the optimum method for their agency

Webinar Benefits

  • Implement better pavement marking methods
  • Discuss pavement marking visibility and retroreflectivity
  • Understand pavement marking service life expectations

Assessment of Learning Outcomes

Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).

Intended Audience

  • Transportation agency (state DOT or local) personnel responsible for installation and maintenance of roadway striping
  • Engineers or technicians responsible for managing pavement marking system
  • Private consultants
  • Striping contractors

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion

To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.

How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?

1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
