This webinar was co-sponsored by ASCE's Geo-Institute (G-I) and ASCE Continuing Education
Instructor: Jeffrey S. Melton, Ph.D., A.M.ASCE
Course Length: 1 Hour
Purpose and Background
A webinar on the use of recycled materials in unbound base applications has already been presented; however, there are a number of byproduct materials that can be used in transportation related geotechnical applications other than as pavement material. This webinar provides an overview of byproduct materials and the applications in which they can be used, and will consider the use of shredded tires and coal combustion products in more detail. It also touches on some of the regulatory issues, cost factors and public perception issues that must be considered. Ideally, the outcome of this webinar will be the increased reuse of byproduct materials, though increasing awareness of beneficial use applications as a means to increase the reuse of byproduct materials in the future would also be acceptable.
Primary Discussion Topics
- Overview of various byproduct materials and potential beneficial use applications
- Overview of regulatory and economic factors that influence the use of byproduct materials
- Current state of practice and regulatory climate regarding the use of coal combustion products in bound and unbound beneficial use applications
- Current state of practice and regulatory climate regarding the use of shredded tires as lightweight aggregate in fill applications
- Current state of practice regarding the use of select other materials in high value applications
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe the regulatory, economic and engineering criteria (safety, cost, performance) that must be considered for successful beneficial reuse of a material
- Name three to four byproduct materials, name appropriate beneficial use applications for each material and list criteria to justify why the named uses are appropriate
- List site specific conditions (surface water, groundwater, proximity to plants/animals/people) that warrant more detailed consideration of beneficial reuse applications
Webinar Benefits
- Learn how the unique properties of byproduct materials can be used to solve geotechnical engineering problems
- Understand how the short and long term costs of using byproduct materials compare to using traditional materials
- Learn about successful projects that can serve as models for future projects
- Understand how regulatory issues and public perception may impact beneficial reuse projects
- Learn about specific byproduct materials and how they can be used in high value beneficial use applications
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).
Intended Audience
- State DOT materials and pavement engineers
- State environmental regulators
- Consultants
- Municipal engineers
Webinar Outline
- Introduction and overview of different byproduct materials and general reuse applications
- Overview of regulatory and economic forces influencing the reuse of byproduct materials
- Review of how select byproduct materials have successfully been reused in geotechnical applications
- More detailed description of shredded tires used as lightweight fill
- More detailed description of high value applications for coal combustion products and the changing regulatory environment
How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion
To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
