Purpose and Background
Building additions are among the most common renovation projects. In the past, structural design for the added space could have been straightforward, but today’s building codes introduce a number of serious challenges for the designer. The codes contain different requirements for the additions that are structurally separated from the original building and for those that are tied-in. A tied-in addition might trigger an upgrade of the existing building for lateral loads, and sometimes even for gravity loads. Therefore, after introducing the basic options for expanding buildings, the presentation explores the relevant code provisions for each.
A detailed examination of the main types of building additions follows. The participants learn which option provides the most cost-effective design in various circumstances and minimizes the efforts involved in strengthening existing framing and foundations. Next, the instructor outlines the most important structural challenges for common types of building additions and explains how to meet them. Practical case studies illustrate the discussion.
