Course Length: 1 Hour
Purpose and Background
Many engineers are familiar with the use of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Hydrologic Engineering Center’s HEC-RAS software program to determine steady flow water surface profiles; however, the steady flow simulation is only part of the overall functionality of the HEC-RAS program. The use of the unsteady flow simulation feature of the software provides an opportunity to model and analyze many hydraulics scenarios that cannot be analyzed with a steady flow simulation.
The use of an unsteady flow simulation model requires significantly more effort than a steady flow simulation. Additionally, many unsteady flow simulation models require detailed troubleshooting before full confidence in model output is achieved. Many challenges associated with unsteady flow simulations can make the development and use of such modeled seem to be daunting task.
Primary Discussion Topics
- Challenges associated with unsteady flow simulations
- Troubleshooting unsteady flow simulations
- Preventive actions to avoid failed simulations
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Provide an organized approach to troubleshooting unsteady flow simulations using the HEC-RAS software program
- Gain a better understanding of how to modify unsteady flow simulations so that warning messages do not result and simulations run to completion
Webinar Benefits
- Learn about what to do before pressing the “Compute” button
- Discuss adjusting calculation options and tolerances
- Learn about how the geometry pre-processor results affect calculations
- Review the detailed log output file and use it to troubleshoot a model
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Students' achievement of the learning outcomes will be assessed via a short post-assessment (true-false, multiple choice and fill in the blank questions).
Intended Audience
This webinar is intended for civil engineers seeking an in-depth look at how to approach troubleshooting unsteady flow simulations in HEC-RAS. Participants should be very familiar with using the HEC-RAS software program before taking this course.
Webinar Outline
- Discussion on tips and tricks to improve likelihood of simulation success
- Focus on geometry and boundary conditions
- Focus on model options for tolerances
- Review of log output and computation log files
How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs and Receive Your Certificate of Completion
To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
