Dan Gillins

As we approach the close of another successful year, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the accomplishments we have achieved together in 2024. It has been a year filled with growth and collaboration, and I am proud of the strides we have made as an Institute.

A Milestone Year for Conferences and Participation

One of the highlights of the year was the Surveying & Geomatics Conference in Corvallis, Oregon. In partnership with Oregon State University, SaGES, and AAGS, the successful event showcased participation from across the surveying and geomatics industry. We were especially excited to see such high engagement from the National Geodetic Survey (NGS), whose contributions helped make the conference a premier event for geomatics professionals. Their involvement sparked insightful discussions on the future of geospatial data, the modernized National Spatial Reference System, and its integration into utility engineering.

In another remarkable achievement, the Pipelines 2024 Conference in Calgary, Canada saw historic attendance that featured the largest technical program to-date of workshops and sessions, highlighting the latest products, services, and projects, as well as a robust exhibit hall. The exchange of knowledge, networking opportunities, and cutting-edge presentations reinforced UESI’s role as a leading hub for professionals in this field.

Student Success and Industry Engagement

I would also like to recognize the remarkable achievements of the next generation of UESI professionals. The UESI Student Surveying Competition Finals at Brigham Young University was a standout event, highlighting the skills and dedication of civil engineering students, representing the 15 teams that successfully advanced after competing among 92 universities in the regional surveying competitions. Their passion and developing technical expertise inspire us and give us confidence in the future of our profession.

Progress in Certification and Professional Development

This year, we made significant progress towards the projected late 2024 launch of the board-certification in Pipeline Engineering – Water (BC.PLW), as well as the development of future certifications for the project utility engineer and surveying engineer. UESI members continue to invest notable time and expertise into the development of these new certifications.

Introducing the New Member Grade for Fellows

To recognize the exemplary contributions of outstanding UESI members, the recent creation of the new UESI Fellow designation will recognize members who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, achievement, and service to the profession and the UESI community.

Looking Ahead

As we close out this successful year, I want to extend my gratitude to all UESI members, volunteers, and partners. Your dedication, expertise, and collaborative spirit have been integral to our accomplishments. Let’s continue this momentum into 2025, where we will build upon this year's successes and further elevate our profession.

Thank you for being part of the UESI community.

Sincerely,

Dan Gillins, Ph.D., P.L.S.
