Purpose and Background
This presentation was scheduled for the 2024 ASCE Convention and has now been rescheduled as a live webinar on ZoomforGov.
Most people don't think of the Gulf and Atlantic Intracoastal Waterways (GIWW or the AIWW) when they think about the waterways of the United States. Yet, since the 1940's these waterways have protected both barge traffic and recreational vessels as they travel along our country's Gulf and Atlantic coasts. The 1100 mile long AIWW is designated Marine Highway 95 and parts of the GIWW is Marine Highway 69 (although the 1300 mile long GIWW is also known as the waterway I-10 since it parallels Interstate 10). This session will give a historic perspective of how these coastal waterways were envisioned and constructed and end with their current usage and their needs into the future.
