Purpose and Background
This session will focus on emerging issues and innovative solutions. The session will start with two talks focused on issues regarding hazardous and nuclear waste landfill design and potential issues to mitigate or address. The session will continue with an innovative method for the remediation of contaminated soils, followed by a talk on the design of shallow energy storage in cold climates.
Benefits and Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Sustainable design of landfills and generated heat within landfills.
- Risk management and heat generated in nuclear repositories
- Complexities of remediating heterogeneous soils and how to address those
- Challenges of energy geo-storage in extreme climates
- Avoid costly errors when it comes to risks involved in nuclear-waste disposal
- Learn new solutions to add one of the most challenging aspects of remediation, i.e., heterogeneity
- Find out about the impacts of landfills on the climate
- Learn about sustainable energy geo-storage in cold climates
Assessment of Learning Outcomes
Achievement of the learning objectives will be assessed through a short post-test.
Who Should Attend?
Environmental Engineers
Geologists
Geotechnical Engineers
Hydrologist
Environmental Consultants
Landfill Designers
Outline
- Subsidence Risk Mitigation in a Low-level Radioactive Waste (LLW) Landfill Final Cover: A Case History
- Heat Generation in MSW Landfills: Effect of Climate and Landfill Size
- Design and Modeling of Shallow Geoenergy Systems in Low-Temperature Subsurface
- Electrokinetic Remediation of Polluted Heterogeneous Subsurface Environments
How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs
To receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short on-line post-test and receive a passing score of 70% or higher within 1 year of purchasing the course.
How do I convert CEUs to PDHs?
1.0 CEU = 10 PDHs [Example: 0.1 CEU = 1 PDH]
